Weekend packing guide

Two or three nights away is the easiest trip to over-pack for. Here is a list that fits a 28-litre bag without compression.

A weekend has a fixed shape: you leave after work or early on a Saturday, you sleep somewhere twice, and you are home before the laundry becomes a problem. That means you can pack by counting days rather than by imagining scenarios. The list below assumes no access to laundry, one weather condition you've actually checked, and a bag in the 18–28 litre range.

The count-by-days table

Quantities to pack for a two-night and three-night trip

Tops34One per day plus the one you travel in
Bottoms12Wear one, pack one only if the second is a different use (gym, formal)
Underwear / socks34One per day; the cheapest item to over-pack and the easiest to wash
Layer11A packable shell or a light knit, not both

Pack in this order

  1. Shoes first, at the far end. They're the most awkward shape, so they set the geometry of everything else. In the Weekender 28 they go in the end pocket so they never touch clean clothing.
  2. Roll bottoms, then tops. Rolling suits soft weekend clothing; folding suits structured shirts. Mixing methods in one compartment wastes space.
  3. Toiletry pouch upright and accessible. If it leaks, it should not be sitting under your clothing.
  4. Layer on top. The jacket you might need on arrival should be the first thing you can reach.
  5. Tech in an outside-access sleeve. You'll open it at security and on the train, not in your hotel room.

Leave these at home

  • A second pair of jeans. You will wear one pair the entire weekend.
  • Full-size toiletries. A weekend needs a few days of product, not a bottle.
  • "Just in case" formal wear, unless the trip has a specific event.
  • A second charging brick. One brick and a short cable per device is enough.
  • A book you're not currently reading.
  • Gym clothes, unless you've already booked the class.

Which bag for a weekend

Two nights with no packed shoes fits Day 18 only if you travel very light and carry a 14-inch laptop or nothing. For most people the honest answer is Weekender 28: it takes the list above with room to spare at two nights and fills up at three.

If your weekends routinely stretch to four nights, you're really taking short trips — read the one-bag packing guide and look at Carry 38.

Common weekend mistakes

Packing for the weather you hope for

Check the forecast for the actual dates, then pack one layer for the coldest hour, not the coldest week of the year.

Bringing two pairs of shoes for two nights

A packed pair takes roughly a fifth of a 28-litre bag. If both pairs serve the same purpose, take one.

Using the front pocket as overflow

Stuffing the front pocket is what pushes a bag past a sizer's depth limit. Keep it for flat items you need in the first ten minutes.

Two-night checklist

  • 3 tops, 1 bottom worn, 3 sets of underwear and socks
  • 1 layer, 1 pair of shoes worn
  • 1 toiletry pouch, decanted
  • Laptop, charger, one cable, adapter if travelling abroad
  • Documents and a payment card in one place you can reach standing up
  • Reusable bottle, empty until you're through security

Sizing questions are answered in the carry-on size guide.
